Amid controversy surrounding Confederate monuments across the South, one Mississippi elementary school will be changing its name for the 2018-19 school year.
According to WAPT, Davis International Baccalaureate Elementary School in Jackson will be renamed Barack Obama Elementary.
Jackson Public Schools is a predominantly black district, with African-Americans making up about 98 percent of the student body at the school named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The decision to rename the school was initiated by parents.
A district website includes a brief Davis biography on a page explaining the namesakes of each school.
