Former Phillies ace Roy Halladay killed at 40 in plane crash

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Roy Halladay was killed in a plane crash at the age of 40, ESPN reported Tuesday.

The two-time Cy Young award winner retired from the MLB four years ago. He became a pilot and was the only confirmed casualty of the crash in waters off the Florida coast in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Philadelphia Phillies released a statement in response to the news:

We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay’s untimely death. There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden.
