According to reports, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is expediting the retirement he announced late last year, telling staff he would be stepping down effective Monday.
As Scope News previously reported, McCabe was expected to leave the bureau later in the year, when he would be eligible for full retirement.
Sources cited by CNN say the sudden announcement was unexpected and was not being discussed Friday.
It is unclear from available reports whether his rumored early exit was prompted by McCabe or the Trump administration, which has frequently criticized both he and the FBI in general for alleged political biases.
One source described the decision as “mutual.”
