A 17-year-old snowboarder representing Team USA became the first gold medalist born this century with an impressive run Sunday in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The slopestyle win by Red Gerard, who was born in June 2000, also made him the Winter Games’ second-youngest individual gold medalist.
“I’m super-psyched,” he said following his historic win. “I cannot believe it.”
That sentiment likely describes his general reaction to participating in his first Olympic Games. As Yahoo reported, Gerard acknowledged he did not anticipate how overwhelming the experience would be.
“I just didn’t really think I knew what the Olympics is,” he said. “I kind of grew up just watching Dew Tour and X Games. I’d never really realized how big it is.”
