Suspected drunk driver faces deportation after crash kills toddler

Authorities in North Carolina confirm the 27-year-old driver accused of driving under the influence and causing a deadly crash involving an ambulance is facing deportation.

Reports indicate Jose Romero was “grossly impaired” when he crashed into an ambulance early Sunday morning near Winston-Salem, leading to the death of a 2-year-old on board.

The victim was being transported to the hospital in stable condition, though officials say the crash caused additional, and ultimately fatal, injuries.

Police believe Romero is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador. He is facing charges including DUI, failure to reduce speed and driving without a license.

A passenger is expected to be charged with failing to render aid.

He has been authorized for deportation if and when he is released from custody for those charges, according to WXII.
