Exec: Joy Behar apologized ‘directly’ to Pence over dig at Christian faith

Following weeks of criticism aimed at the co-host of ABC’s “The View,” Disney CEO Bob Iger announced this week that Joy Behar has apologized to Vice President Mike Pence for her comments deriding his religious beliefs.

In a segment of one show that aired last month, Behar declared that it is “one thing to talk to Jesus” but “another thing when Jesus talks to you” as part of a conversation about Pence’s brand of Christianity.

“That’s called mental illness if I’m not correct — hearing voices,” she added.

Pence has responded publicly, if indirectly, to Behar’s controversial comments.

“People of all different faith traditions, they cherish their faith in God,” he said in a Fox News interview. “And to have ABC have a forum that spoke in such demeaning terms, I think it’s evidence of how out of touch some in the mainstream media are with the faith and values of the American people.”

During a recent shareholders meeting, Iger responded to concerns — mentioning Behar’s remarks specifically — that corporate networks including ABC and ESPN had become too politicized.

“I don’t know where I start,” he said. “First of all, Joy Behar apologized to Vice President Pence directly. She made a call to him and apologized, which I thought was absolutely appropriate.”
