After receiving widespread criticism for the perceived insensitivity of a recent tweet, a local Planned Parenthood branch in Pennsylvania has removed the post and acknowledged its tone was inappropriate.
The post read:
We need a disney princess who’s had an abortion
We need a disney princess who’s pro-choice
We need a disney princess who’s an undocumented immigrant
We need a disney princess who’s actually a union worker
We need a disney princess who’s trans
It immediately sparked backlash from anti-abortion commentators.
According to the Associated Press, Planned Parenthood Keystone President and CEO Melissa Reed said the underlying point behind the post was lost in its inappropriate context.
She went on to affirm her belief that cultural references still play a “critical role” in the organization’s mission to encourage “meaningful conversations about sexual and reproductive health issues and policies, including abortion.”
