Pentagon rejects claims that most missiles in Syrian strike were intercepted

In a trilateral overnight air raid by U.S., British and French forces, Pentagon officials say each of the more than 100 missiles hit their Syrian targets.

Remarks Saturday morning by Pentagon Joint Chiefs of Staff Director Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie stood in stark contrast to early assertions by Russian military officials.

“None of our aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses,” he said.

Russian sources claimed nearly 70 percent of cruise missiles were intercepted and deflected by defense systems.

McKenzie also addressed concerns of possible collateral damage, saying that as of his comments the military is “not aware of any civilian casualties.”

The operation was staged and executed with the support of NATO allies in response to allegations of the Syrian government’s continued use of chemical weapons against civilians.
