Less than a day after an Alabama state lawmaker described Gov. Kay Ivey as a “closeted” lesbian, she has issued a statement forcefully denying the accusation.
According to the Birmingham News, Democratic state Rep. Patricia Todd, who is openly gay, alleged that Ivey lived with her “girlfriend” before winning her gubernatorial bid last year.
“I am sick of closeted elected officials,” Todd wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.
The following day, Ivey issued her response.
“This most recent personal attack against me is beyond disgraceful,” she wrote. “It’s a disgusting lie being pushed by a paid left wing liberal political operative.”
She called the allegation “false,” “wrong” and “a bald faced lie,” suggesting she is “not gonna let them get away with it.”
