Mayor reacts to sign telling blacks to ‘stay out of white churches’

An Alabama pastor is again at the center of controversy after his church posted a sign calling for segregation among Birmingham’s congregations.

According to WBRC, one side of New Era Baptist Church’s latest sign read, “Black folks need to stay out of white churches.”

The opposite side read, “White folks refused to be our neighbors.”

Pastor Michael R. Jordan has not responded to the growing backlash, which included denunciation this week from Mayor Randall Woodfin.

“There is a spirit that is over this city that has to be brought down,” he wrote.
“A spirit of racism and division. We have to change the conversation to what we need it to evolve into.”
