According to new reports this week, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt directly asked President Donald Trump earlier this year to fire the attorney general.
As CNN reported on Tuesday, three individuals familiar with the Oval Office conversation said Pruitt urged the president to nominate him to replace Jeff Sessions at the helm of the Justice Department.
Reports specifically indicate he offered to fill the attorney general role on a temporary basis under the Vacancies Reform Act. He said that after 210 days in that interim position he would return to Oklahoma and pursue elected office.
Pruitt is at the center of a widening congressional probe surrounding allegations of inappropriate expenditures and relationships with lobbyists.
