Mollie Tibbetts’ dad says stop using her death to make racist arguments

In response to the effort of some politicians and pundits to capitalize on the death of an Iowa college student, allegedly at the hands of an undocumented immigrant, the victim’s father is speaking out.

Ron Tibbetts wrote a recent Des Moines Register editorial in which he asserted that his daughter, Mollie, would have disagreed with the arguments being made — ostensibly on her behalf — by some who have spoken out since her death was confirmed.

“Please leave us out of your debate,” he wrote.

The grieving father went on to write that the suspect in this case is “no more a reflection of the Hispanic community as white supremacists are of all white people.”

He offered an apology to that community and asked that people using Mollie Tibbett’s name to “show some dignity” and allow her family to “grieve in privacy and with dignity.”
