The town council of New Britain, Connecticut, will finally address a common complaint among many local motorists.
Though Paul Manafort Drive technically honors the former mayor, the name he shares with his infamous son has made the signs an eyesore for critics.
Even before the former Trump campaign manager’s conviction last month, calls to change the name have been growing. As a quick fix, the current mayor decided to add “Sr.” to signage in an effort to distinguish the three-term mayor who died in 2013 from his felon namesake.
Democratic council member Carlo Carlozzi Jr. criticized the decision, which he said was made without consulting local elected officials.
“When she did that, that’s when we started hearing from people in the community,” he said, noting that the addition of a suffix “does not take away the scandal of the Paul Manafort name.”
Council members will vote on Wednesday to determine whether it will be permanently changed.
One resident began a petition nearly a year ago to designate the street “George Springer Drive” in honor of the hometown hero who currently plays major league baseball.
