America magazine, a leading Jesuit publication, has rescinded its endorsement of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh following Senate testimony on Thursday.
The judge is accused of sexually assaulting a then-15-year-old girl during a 1982 part when he 17 and attended a Jesuit high school in Maryland.
“While we previously endorsed the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh on the basis of his legal credentials and his reputation as a committed textualist, it is now clear that the nomination should be withdrawn,” the magazine’s editorial board wrote.
The editorial concluded by suggesting that Kavanaugh “is not the only” potential nominee with similar constitutional values.
“For the good of the country and the future credibility of the Supreme Court in a world that is finally learning to take reports of harassment, assault and abuse seriously, it is time to find a nominee whose confirmation will not repudiate that lesson,” the editors wrote.
