Former Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, a Republican currently running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, says he was the victim of an armed robbery as he left a favorite eatery Saturday evening.

He said he initially assumed the suspect — a white man in his late 30s about 5 foot 9 — was “going through a difficult time” and would solicit a handout.

“I will often provide them with resources,” he said of the area’s homeless, adding that he soon realized this incident was much more serious than a typical encounter.

Stanton said he saw what appeared to be a hatchet in the suspect’s hand and the man attempted to usher him to a darker location.

He handed his wallet to the man and ran to the restaurant to report the crime to police, adding that he is “OK” after the attack. The suspect didn’t get away with much, Stanton added.

“I’m a public servant, so there wasn’t much money in my wallet,” he said.
