Nikki Haley speaks out against ‘our toxic political life’

Shortly after stepping down from her post as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley delivered a message denouncing the nation’s current political climate this week.

The comments came during the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.

“In our toxic political life, I’ve heard some people in both parties describe their opponents as enemies or evil,” she said during her address. “In America, our political opponents are not evil.”

Haley went on to say that she has “seen true evil” during her service as ambassador, going on to describe rape, torture and murder used by regimes around the world.

Her remarks were not completely devoid of partisanship, though, and included a joke at the expense of Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Haley, an Indian-American, jabbed the Massachusetts Democrat over the results of a recent DNA test. Warren has faced criticism for citing her Native American heritage in the past and produced results showing the likelihood that she has a distant connection.

“I get it,” Haley told the audience. “You wanted an Indian woman, but Elizabeth Warren failed her DNA test.”
