A group of Presbyterian ministers in the Austin area are speaking out after they say someone sent out letters on behalf of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz with a church’s name attached as an endorsement of the incumbent Republican’s campaign.
Several churches in the area reportedly received the mailings, though it was unclear where they actually originated.
Return addresses did not appear to be legitimate and the letters reportedly expressed critical positions regarding issues including gender and abortion.
Rev. Amy Meyer said local pastors were “sad” when they discovered the letters.
“Because we didn’t want people to think that our views were the same as the letters views,” she said. “And we want people to know that we are allies of the LGBTQ+ community — we know that they’ve been in pain. And we want to be allies for them we don’t want them to be in pain.”
