A police officer in North Carolina says he got a new pet and partner out of an investigation into animal abuse in the region.
Hillsborough Police Lt. Andy Simmons said authorities “found three cats that had previously been on Facebook Marketplace that somebody tried to get to use for bait for dog fighting.”
When he learned about the alleged plot, he was inspired to act.
It didn’t start as “an official plan,” Simmons acknowledged, and resulted in him bringing the feline to work.
“People will say that we’re codependent at this point,” he added.
The officer remarked that it is “not many places you get to come to work with one of your good friends.”
Mercy, as she’s become known, has become popular among officers and visitors alike.
“Her overall purpose is to make people smile, have a good time, hang out,” Simmons said.
He made it clear that when her service at the station is over, Mercy will be moving in with his family for retirement.
