Authorities in Alabama say a man and woman died during a shooting this week at a Walmart in Talladega.
The violent attack was part of an alleged kidnapping attempt early Wednesday morning.
Talladega police received a call at about 4:30 p.m. advising of a disturbance at a nearby gas station.
Officers in the area quickly responded and identified the male suspect.
According to State Bureau of Investigation Lt. Jon Riley, the man began shooting at officers, who returned fire, fatally injuring him.
Upon approaching the suspect’s vehicle, authorities reportedly found the female kidnapping victim dead. It was unclear from available reports how she is believed to have died.
One of the officers involved was transported to an area trauma center via air ambulance and is expected to survive his injuries. The other injured officer was not shot but admitted to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators did not initially know whether the kidnapping suspect knew his victim or if she was randomly targeted.
Authorities later named the alleged kidnapper and his suspected victim.
Police say the man has been identified as 48-year-old Eugene Benjamin Weathers. The woman found dead in the rear of the vehicle was identified as 24-year-old Brianna Nicole Post.
