A Chicago-area Satanic Temple has donated a seasonal display to the Illinois Capitol building. The sculpture is titled “Snaketivity” and is currently on display in the rotunda along more traditional holiday motifs.
Underneath the work depicting an outstretched hand holding a snake-wrapped apple is a plaque reading “Knowledge is the greatest gift.”
The state is “required by the first Amendment of the United States Constitution to allow temporary, public displays in the state capitol so long as these displays are not paid for by taxpayer dollars,” a sign nearby explains.
An online fundraiser benefiting the temple’s display states that it “will no longer allow one religious perspective to dominate the discourse” in the rotunda and seeks donations to help “bring Satan to Springfield!”
A decade ago, the same Capitol displayed a Festivus pole as depicted in the sitcom “Seinfeld.”
