At an event this week, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson gave some insight into his dealings with President Donald Trump.
“So often, the president would say, ‘Here’s what I want to do and here’s how I want to do it,'” he said. “And I would have to say to him, ‘Mr. President, I understand what you want to do but you can to it that way. It violates the law.'”
Tillerson said he would always tell Trump the he was “ready to go up there and fight the fight” with Congress if he wanted to follow the appropriate legislative route.
He also commented on Americans’ fascination with Trump’s tweets, noting that he did not intend it to be a criticism of the president.
“I will be honest with you, it troubles me that the American people seem to want to know so little about issues that they are satisfied with a 128 characters,” he said.
