Though outgoing Defense Secretary James Mattis signaled in his resignation letter that he would be stepping down from his post in about two months, President Donald Trump apparently had other ideas.
In a tweet on Sunday, he announced Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan will take over for his boss on an interim basis at the beginning of next year.
“Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing,” Trump tweeted. “He will be great!”
One source cited by CNN signaled that Trump’s displeasure with the negative media coverage surrounding Mattis’ resignation prompted him to expedite the secretary’s departure.
