Schumer: Trump says he might keep gov’t closed for ‘months or even years’

Following a meeting the Democratic congressional leaders described as at time “contentious,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said President Donald Trump remained committed to a lengthy government shut down.

Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed a desire to reopen government before continuing a debate with the White House over border security funding.

“He resisted,” Schumer said of Trump. “In fact he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time — months or even years.”

Asked whether the meeting resulted in any progress nearly two weeks into the shutdown, Pelosi said that those in the meeting achieved “a better understanding of each other’s position” and were able to “eliminate some possibilities.”

Nevertheless, Schumer said that it is “very hard to see how progress will be made unless they open up the government.”
