The Democratic Party’s highest-ranking legislators issued a statement demanding an opportunity to refute what they predict will be “malice and misinformation” in President Donald Trump’s recently announced address regarding the border wall debate and government shutdown.
The statement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer came in light of confirmation by the major television networks that they will air the speech.
“Now that the television networks have decided to air the President’s address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime,” the Democrats’ statement said.
Pelosi and Schumer went on to cite an increasingly bipartisan call for Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “to end the Trump Shutdown and re-open the government while Congress debates the President’s expensive and ineffective wall.”
They went on to note that the Democrat-led House moved on its first day to act on the issue, though McConnell has signaled his refusal to put any further bill through that Trump might reject.
