Gov. Northam resists Dem leaders’ call to resign over racist yearbook photo

Following an apology Friday and an indication he intended to remain in the Virginia governor’s mansion, Democrat Ralph Northam reportedly continued to resist the growing number of bipartisan calls for him to resign.

The backlash stems from a recently surfaced 1984 medical school yearbook in which he appears to be one of two people in a photo depicting an individual in a Ku Klux Klan hood and another in blackface.

Virginia Democratic Party Chair Susan Swecker released a statement on Saturday confirming that the party made a “decision to let Governor Northam do the correct thing and resign this morning.”

She added that party leaders have since “gotten word he will not do so this morning.”
