Vegan couple starves infant, rejects formula for potato mash, cops say

A Florida infant is in state custody and his parents are facing criminal charges after police reportedly found him severely malnourished and close to death.

The 5-month-old boy had reportedly gained less than a pound from his birth weight of 7 pounds 9 ounces. Officials say his eyes were sunken and ribs were exposed.

Reports indicate the child’s doctor provided vegan parents Robert Buskey, 31, and Julia French, 20, with an organic formula that allowed their child to thrive. But police allege they began feeding the boy a potato-based substance that led to severe malnutrition.

After the child was hospitalized and began receiving fluids, reports indicate he almost immediately began gaining much-needed weight.

“I’ve never seen a child to this level, this close to possible death,” said Titusville Police Detective Lauren Watson.
