After controversial Fox News host Jeanine Pirro dedicated a recent opening monologue to criticizing freshman U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, the network put out a statement publicly distancing itself from her comments.
Pirro attracted immediate backlash after pointing out that the Minnesota Democrat wears a headscarf as part of her Muslim faith.
“Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia Law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?” she asked.
A Fox News Channel statement the following day addressed the incident.
“We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro’s comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar,” the network wrote. “They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly.”
Omar was appreciative of the public statement.
“Thank you @FoxNews,” she tweeted. “No one’s commitment to our Constitution should be questioned because of their faith or country of birth.”
