A new Axios poll shows half of respondents in youngest two generational categories want to live in a socialist America.
That number is considerably higher than the roughly 37 percent of respondents in general who answered the same way.
As more democratic socialists gain traction in U.S. politics, criticism of the nation’s capitalist roots has become more pronounced. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, R-N.Y., called capitalism “irredeemable” in a recent speech.
Millenials and those in the younger Generation Z also break from older voters in the issues they find most important ahead of the 2020 presidential election. These younger generations will account for as much as 37 percent of the total votes cast in that cycle.
The poll shows they are most concerned with topics including immigration, health care, climate change, racial inequality and gun violence.
