During a statement from the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed his “great respect” for Germany and its leader, Angela Merkel.
“My father is German, was German,” he said of Fred Trump. “Born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany.”
In fact, his grandfather was a German immigrant and his son — the president’s father — was born in New York in 1905. Friedrich Trump moved to the U.S. 20 years prior, but reports indicate he left after authorities determined he entered the nation illegally.
The president’s grandfather and grandmother — already pregnant with Fred Trump — later returned to the states.
The president’s mother was an immigrant, having been born in Scotland.
While Tuesday’s statement might have been explained as a slip of the tongue, reports indicate Trump has made the inaccurate claim on at least two previous occasions in recent years.
