Early front-runner Joe Biden is not wasting any time taking the 2020 presidential fight to the incumbent.
In comments this week, he told a crowd in South Carolina that he has been thinking about the most effective way to refer to President Donald Trump. For his part, Trump has repeatedly referred to Biden as “Sleepy Joe.”
The former vice president said he wants to address the “ridiculous things” emanating from the White House.
“There are so many nicknames that I’m inclined to give this guy,” Biden said. “We could just start with clown.”
He went on to call Trump a “no-good SOB” incapable of coherent political debate.
“The only place he has any confidence is in the mud,” Biden said. “The only thing he doesn’t know how to respond to is issues and specifics.”
The candidate did, however, walk back an earlier statement that he would have likely taken Trump “behind the barn and beat the hell out of him” if they had been in high school together.
“Guess what?” he said. “I probably shouldn’t have done that. The presidency is an office that requires dignity and re-establishing respect and standing.”
Nevertheless, Biden stood firm in his condemnation of Trump’s rhetoric and behavior.
“You’ve got Jim Crow sneaking back in,” he said of the president’s policies on race. “You know what happens when you have an equal right to vote? They lose.”
He said that he routinely responds to Trump’s statements in the same way.
“When he says these ridiculous things he says, I mean this: I put my hand up and say, ‘Everybody knows who you are,'” he continued. “Because they do.”
