Sen. Scott claims AOC has ’embarrassed’ House ‘to the point of irrelevance’

When Sen. Cory Booker put forward a gun-control proposal as part of his 2020 presidential bid, a Republican colleague took notice.

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida criticized the initiative in a series of tweets.

“If you want to buy a gun, [Booker] wants you to register with the federal government,” he wrote. “This would be scary if Booker had any chance of becoming President.”

He went on to ask whether American would have to “register sharp knives” next, a statement that attracted its own congressional response.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., characterized his comments as “embarrassing” and emblematic of a larger societal issue.

She suggested that if he were “a female candidate,” he might be called “crazy” or “uninformed” for his rhetoric.

“But since you’re not, this inadequacy is accepted as normal,” she wrote.

Scott accused her of not recognizing his attempt at sarcasm, going on to recycle his political rival’s barb.

“That a sitting Congresswoman doesn’t understand sarcasm would be embarrassing to the institution if you hadn’t embarrassed yours to the point of irrelevance already,” Scott said. “America rejects socialism and will continue to.”
