In an appearance on CNN, he cited “inside information” indicating that a public relations specialist hatched a similar ploy in the 1980s.

“He said, ‘Donald, what you need to do is we’ll … make sort of a rumor that you’re running for president,'” Stern told Anderson Cooper.

The plan worked to boost sales of his book at that time, Stern said, noting that Trump likely staged his 2016 run for similar reasons.

“‘The Apprentice’ ratings were — were not what they were,” Stern added. “NBC was not going to give [Trump] a raise. And what’s a better way than to get NBC’s interest? I’ll run for president and I’ll get lots of press. And I think that’s what happened.”

He said Trump contacted him for his political support, expressing confidence that the president “would’ve appointed [him] to something” like the Supreme Court or the Federal Communications Commission.

“I think Donald would give me anything I’d asked,” Stern said.
