Clarence Thomas wants SCOTUS to review abortion as ‘tool of eugenic manipulation’

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas thinks the issue of abortion is due another review.

In comments this week, the conservative jurist weighed in on the hot-button issue. Several states have passed increasingly restrictive abortion measures in the apparent hopes of sparking a high-court challenge to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Though he agreed with the majority in turning down a challenge to a law in place in Indiana, Thomas cited eugenics as a reason to reconsider abortion laws.

“Given the potential for abortion to become a tool of eugenic manipulation, the court will soon need to confront the constitutionality of laws like Indiana’s,” he wrote.

The state law in question bans abortion based on the sex, ethnicity or disability of a fetus.

Thomas argued that Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood on such beliefs and that since “the beginning, birth control and abortion were promoted as means of effectuating eugenics.”
