One prominent Trump critic on the right recently denounced the Republican Party as a whole.
Columnist George Will had been a Republican for decades leading up to the 2016 presidential race. Since then, he has frequently spoken out against the administration and its supporters in the GOP.
Among his most pointed denunciation came during a recent interview.
“It has become a cult,” he said of the party in the age of Trump.
Will cited “an absence of ideas” as the root cause of this shift.
“Conservatives said we’re for free trade,” he continued. “Trump said, ‘By the way, you’re not anymore.’ And they said, ‘OK, we’re not for free trade anymore.’ Or they pretend to be.”
While he also criticized Democratic presidential candidates for touting policies “they know are not going to happen,” Will said anybody in the field would ultimately be better for conservatives — provided he or she is kept in check by a Republican-led Senate.
