Police say the 51-year-old St. Augustine resident is facing a charge of battery based on video they say shows him attempt to slap the phone out of Michael Williams’ hand. The reporter was recording an alleged encounter between the suspect and another individual at Donald Trump’s re-election announcement event earlier this week.

“Are you taping?” Daniel Kestner reportedly asked Williams at one point. “I don’t want it. Stop.”

From there, the suspect allegedly threatened to kick the reporter in his crotch and smacked his hand, prompting the intervention of security staff nearby.

A police report claims he hit the victim “willingly” and the arresting officer wrote that “the smell of alcohol was emitting from Kestner’s person and was more prevalent when he entered my patrol vehicle, indicating Kestner was intoxicated.”

As for the suspect, however, the entire incident has been overblown.

He told reporters that “it’s not that big of a deal,” describing the circumstances surrounding his arrest as “the dumbest thing ever.”

Kestner went on to say that Williams “would have been bleeding” if he had actually “struck him.”
