According to Tim Alberta’s new book “American Carnage,” the Wisconsin Republican said he told himself that he needed to “have a relationship with this guy to help him get his mind right,” adding that Trump “didn’t know anything about government” upon being elected president in 2016.

“I wanted to scold him all the time,” Ryan reportedly said of the situation.

The book goes on to describe some specific examples of their tense relationship and times the GOP leader helped Trump “make much better decisions” than his “knee-jerk reaction.”

Alberta also writes that Ryan looked at his retirement from Congress as an “escape hatch” from the frustrating environment.
