Puerto Rico gov says he was tired when he called elected official a derogatory term

The governor of Puerto Rico was in damage-control mode after the leak of an offensive conversation revealed he called a New York official a “puta,” or the Spanish equivalent of “whore,” as well as profane and personal attacks on others.

Blaming his reference to then New York City council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito in part on lack of sleep, Ricardo Rossello nevertheless apologized.

“None of this justifies the words I’ve written,” he said. “My apologies to all the people I have offended.”

Rossello further downplayed his remarks as “a private chat.”
