Bill Lee faced immediate backlash for the move designated days of special observation for divisive historical figures including Nathan Bedford Forrest and Robert E. Lee.

As for the former, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was among those to speak out against Lee’s proclamation.

“This is WRONG,” he tweeted on Friday. “Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate general & a delegate to the 1868 Democratic Convention. He was also a slave trader & the 1st Grand Wizard of the KKK. Tennessee should not have an official day (tomorrow) honoring him. Change the law.”
