As stock prices plummet and concern levels rise amid the rapid global spread of coronavirus disease 2019, the president’s eldest son launched an unsubstantiated partisan attack on the Fox News Channel.
During an “Fox & Friends” appearance on Friday, Donald Trump Jr. accused his father’s critics of being “infected badly” with either the new COVID-19 virus “or Trump derangement syndrome.”
In response to co-host Brian Kilmeade’s prompt for an opinion about how Democrats are responding to the disease, Trump Jr. alleged that they “seemingly hope that it comes here and kills millions of people so that they could end Donald Trump’s streak of winning,” describing his speculative scenario as “a new level of sickness.”
The younger Trump’s comments come after the president repeatedly attacked his political rivals on Twitter.
“Low Ratings Fake News MSDNC [sic] (Comcast) & @CNN are doing everything possible to make the Caronavirus [sic] look as bad as possible, including panicking markets, if possible,” he tweeted early Wednesday morning. “Likewise their incompetent Do Nothing Democrat comrades are all talk, no action. USA in great shape!”
Despite the president’s tweets and his son’s suggestion that Democrats are rooting for the death of their fellow Americans, Vice President Mike Pence said in remarks shortly after taking over the nation’s response to COVID-19 that this is “no time for partisanship.”
