Even as the number of coronavirus-related deaths in America continues to rise into the thousands, the nation’s top infectious disease expert has his eye on the potential of the pandemic to resurface in the fall.
With social distancing recommendations extended for another month and millions of Americans living under some form of shelter-in-place order, Dr. Anthony Fauci believes that COVID-19 is likely to start spreading again even after this first deadly wave has passed.
“In fact, I would anticipate that that would actually happen because of the degree of transmissibility,” he said.
Because of the hard lessons the U.S. is learning from this outbreak, however, Fauci predicted that governments would be much better prepared in the future.
“Our ability to go out and be able to test, identify, isolate, and contact trace, will be orders of magnitude better than what it was just a couple months ago,” he said, stressing the importance of developing a vaccine “that’s on track and multiple other candidates.”
