‘There will be a lot of death’: Trump sets somber new COVID-19 expectations

After Donald Trump repeatedly assured the nation that the U.S. would not suffer widespread casualties from the coronavirus pandemic, the nation has now become the epicenter of the highly infectious disease.

In recent days, he has delivered an altogether different message, declaring earlier this week that a death toll between 100,000 and 200,000 would qualify as a success.

Trump doubled down on the grim message in comments he made on Saturday, at which point more than 8,000 Americans had died after contracting the virus.

“There will be a lot of death, unfortunately, but a lot less death if this was not done,” the impeached president said in an apparent attempt to tout his administration’s response to the crisis.
