‘A threat to credible democracy’: Romney slams Trump’s string of IG dismissals

On the heels of Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday that he had fired U.S. Department of State Inspector General Steve Linick, senators have been planning an investigation into the decision.

Although the most prominent critics are Democrats, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, expressed his disapproval of the president’s “unprecedented” string inspectors general ousted without “good cause.”

He said such a decision “chills the independence” these officials need to perform their duties and constitutes “a threat to accountable democracy and a fissure in the constitutional balance of power.”
