The backlash was quick and severe as video of her reaction spread on social media. She told Christian Cooper that she would be “taking a picture and calling the cops” to “tell them there’s an African-American man threatening” her life.

Christian Cooper said he was filming Amy Cooper — no relation — because she was in violation of rules mandating that all dogs in the park be on a leash.

The woman attempted to explain her behavior in a public apology.

“I think I was just scared,” she said. “When you’re alone in the Ramble, you don’t know what’s happening. It’s not excusable; it’s not defensible.”

Christian Cooper responded to her apology, saying that “if it’s genuine and if she plans on keeping her dog on a leash in the Ramble going forward, then we have no issues with each other.”
