After the Trump administration ordered federal law enforcement officers to patrol the streets amid protests in Portland, Oregon, that city’s Democratic mayor gave the president an earful.
“The tactics that the Trump administration are using on the streets of Portland are abhorrent,” said Ted Wheeler.
He went on to assert that the largely unidentified officers are “not wanted here, we haven’t asked them here” and “we want them to leave.”
As for Trump, he attempted to pin the blame on local leaders, claiming that his administration is only “trying to help Portland” after its elected officials let the citizens down.
Wheeler, however, sees things much differently.
“The president has a complete misunderstanding of cause and effect,” the mayor said. “What’s happening here is we have dozens, if not hundreds, of federal troops descending upon our city and what they’re doing is they are sharply escalating the situation.”
