House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., was among the highest-ranking Democrats to express concern about the president’s rhetoric.
“I believe that he plans to install himself in some kind of emergency way to continue to hold onto office,” the congressman said. “And that’s why the American people had better wake up.”
His comments came during a CNN interview on Sunday, days after Trump tweeted that Americans might not be able to “properly, securely and safely vote” on November 3.
According to Clyburn, such a troubling “strong-arm tactics” are the stuff of dictators and “put a cloud over the election.”
