Although he appeared to reverse course by calling it “patriotic” to wear a face mask, Donald Trump this week once again downplayed and mocked the universally recommended protective step.
His latest remarks came on Friday during an event at his own country club in New Jersey.
In response to a reporter’s question about “dozens of people who are not following the guidelines,” many in the crowd booed and the president pivoted.
“You’re wrong about that because it’s a political activity,” Trump alleged. “And it’s also a peaceful protest. To me they all look like they pretty much all have masks on.”
While his fans applauded the argument, he added that there is a supposed “exclusion in the law” that would permit such behavior.
“I’d call it peaceful protest because they know you’re coming up and they know the news is fake,” he said.
