While Donald Trump has continued to claim he and those in his inner circle have been wrongly accused of criminal behavior, rumors persist that he might issue even more pardons in the waning days of his presidency — including a possible attempt to pardon himself.
New York Attorney General Letitia James offered a variation on that common forecast, suggesting that he would instead step down, allowing Mike Pence to take over and pardon him.
The president “can preemptively pardon individuals, and the vast majority of legal scholars have indicated that he cannot pardon himself,” she said during a recent interview.
James later declared: “I suspect at some point in time he will step down and allow the vice president to pardon him.”
