Interactive ‘Othello’ Performance Coming To Botanical Garden

Even ardent theater buffs have likely never seen a Shakespearean tragedy brought to life like this.

Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden will serve as the stage for a unique rendition of “Othello” during a two-night run beginning Saturday. The shows are being presented by the Shared Radiance Performing Arts Company and Artistic Director Sherri Raeford spoke to Scope News about what makes them different from a typical theatrical performance.

She said the “unique and interactive performance” will involve “the audience joining the actors as they travel from scene to scene as this tragic story unfolds.”

Although attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket for scenes during which the audience will be seated, Raeford suggested wearing comfortable shoes in order to keep up with the more fast-paced moments.

She also stressed that the play will include references to sensitive themes including racism, abuse, and violence.

“Unlike most stationary theater experiences, the audience becomes immersed in the action as they join the actors on the journey as they progress to different areas of the garden,” she explained.

While the Saturday and Sunday shows are intended for an outdoor setting, they will be moved indoors in case of rain. Both performances begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Shared Radiance troupe is performing “Othello” in multiple locations across the region, but each is tailored for the venue. Raeford said that the company, which has staged productions at the botanical garden in the past, “always enjoys the beauty and variety” that the setting provides.
