The owners of Kernersville’s newest eatery welcomed a host of guests for a late lunch following a ribbon-cutting ceremony downtown on Friday.
La Moñona specializes in empanadas and arepas with a menu owners Jonathan Sproles and Natalia Guarnizo-Sproles described as a combination of Colombian street food and American southern flavors.
“Empanada is corn flour with potatoes and chicken or potatoes and beef inside, served with a traditional aji sauce,” Jonathan Sproles said. “And then arepas are corn flour and mozzarella mixed together. We do it a little different — we put the meat on top instead of inside just to add a little twist to what we do, then throw some southern flavors in there with it to make it more familiar for our demographic.”
Among the other menu items offered on the food truck, which was operating from the Musten & Crutchfield Food Market parking lot on North Main Street for the grand opening, is a Colombian hot dog.
“They dress them different in Colombia,” Sproles said. “The only thing we don’t do that they do is they use quail eggs. We don’t use quail eggs.”
As for the origin of the food truck’s name, he explained: “There’s a game in Colombia called tejo, and it’s like explosive cornhole. It’s a game I fell in love with in Colombia, and [la moñona] is the highest score you can get in one hand.”
Sproles used the opportunity to express his gratitude to the community, notably the Chamber of Commerce, Musten & Crutchfield, as well as family and friends, in the months leading up to Friday’s grand opening.
