Next Step Ministries School Supply Drive Benefits Local Families

Kernersville schools will be back in session earlier than usual after the summer break, and one nonprofit organization is doing its part to help struggling parents provide the supplies their children will need.

Christina Alvaro, who serves as community victim services director for Next Step Ministries, spoke to Scope News about the ongoing event.

“One of our goals for hosting the school supply drive is to ensure that the financial burden is taken off of parents who may be struggling,” she said. “This year, we wanted to specifically focus on a local school, and Kernersville Elementary has been one of the wonderful schools that has worked with us in the past to help children access education.”

The items collected will directly benefit rising fifth graders and those interested in donating items can visit either the Next Step Ministries administrative office, 210 North Main Street Suite 238, or thrift store, 955 Highway 66 South. Collection bins will be available at both locations until Aug. 1.

Various common school supplies are being collected, but those in highest demand include headphones or earbuds, two-inch binders, dry erase markers, pencils, and pocket dividers.

“For the past two years, Next Step Ministries has been focusing on children’s programming for our Safe House guests and the Kernersville community,” Alvaro explained. “Last year, we were able to host our first school supply drive where we assisted over 25 families in need.”

She went on to highlight the “significant connection between financial stress and domestic violence” as one of the motivating factors behind the organization’s decision to host such events in the community.

“We are planning to host some type of school supply drive every year to help more students access the resources and supplies that they need.”

Other items being collected in this drive include markers, highlighters, colored pencils, index cards, lined paper, spiral and composition notebooks, pocket folders, pencil pouches, glue sticks, and hand sanitizer.
